I have a few spots in my yard that are constant trouble. When it rains a lot, water pools there for days. When it is dry, the soil becomes literally hard as a rock. I've thought about trenching these areas and filling with quality soil or perhaps roto tilling and working in some better soil. Has anyone ever tried this?

I don't have any experience with doing any sort of renovation. However, it sounds like the water is pooling (i.e. Not absorbing) hence the drying out after the water is gone. Compacted soil maybe? I'd aerate, sand, and apply surfactant (like Penterra).
