I have been using a toro greensmaster 1000 for about 6 months and the top nut that secures the drum belt has started to slip off. There is a gap near the top.

It looks like the 7/8 nut needs to be tightened. How do you tighten this? There is a round shaft that moves but no where to hold when tightening. I'm guessing I have to go on the other side somewhere. Any ideas are much appreciated. Thanks.

Can you engage the traction clutch to provide enough resistance to tighten the nut?

Also, that looks like a lock nut, if it's backing off by itself it likely needs to be replaced.

I had to replace the short shaft of the differential that is under the boot when I got my GM1600. I ended up using a pair of vicegrips to hold the shaft the nut you are trying to tighten is threaded onto. If that nut is truly backing off, I'd suggest you get a new one as the locking nylon insert on yours may be worn and not doing what it's intended to.

If you end up going the vice grip route(which seems pretty crude, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do), you might want to put something between the rod and the teeth of the grips to somewhat protect the rod from bite marks, possibly some thick rubber or a rag or something more clever...just sayin'

I agree. I actually used an old shop towel to wrap the shaft before clamping the vice grips. Alternatively you could use a strap wrench like this around the pulley.



Sure would have been nice if Toro would have put double flats in the shaft so an open end or crescent wrench could have been used.

The service manual indicates (page 4-26) that both the long and short axle have a hole in them:


To remove the nut on the short side (page 4-31) it says to loosen the hose clamp on the boot and use a drift punch in the hole while removing the nut with a 7/8" socket. I couldn't find anything in the manual on how to access the hole on the long side axle though (like if it's hidden by the bearing housing) - and I don't see the hole on the long side axle of my GM1600. It might be something worth digging into though, so I wanted to pass this along. :thumbup:
