TL;DR
Moved to a new house/neighborhood, want to learn how to get going with a proper lawn care plan. Eager to learn, prepared to put in the work.
-----------------------------------------------------

Good afternoon lawn gurus. I'm a relatively seasoned vet when it comes to online message boards so, before posting this thread, I did some searching throughout TLF. It's quite obvious the wealth of information here is top notch. That said, I was unable to find a centralized Sticky regarding beginners to proper lawn care.

Quick background, I live just outside Indianapolis, IN and have been a homeowner since 2006. I am an architect professionally and have two kids under 10. I also have two chocoloate labrador retreivers that are awesome, except for the fact that they're ridiculously good at creating piles all over the yard.

I recently moved (3 weeks ago) about a mile up the road to a newer neighborhood with about half the lawn (new lot acreage is 10,800SF, old lot was 24,800 SF). That said, my old lawn was in an older neighborhood and both the size and level of present issues always discouraged me from researching too far into proper lawn care. Basically I would by some Scott's TurfBuilder and throw it down in the spring and in the fall. Aside from semi-regular mowing, that was it.

My new home feels like a more manageable fresh start, and the neighborhood is much nicer, so I'd like to get going properly.

From what I've read, it would seem that I've either just missed or am at the very tail end of Spring care. That said, I have no idea what type of grass I've got, what sort of weeds I'm dealing with, any diseases, etc. So, knowing (or not knowing) all that, I realize that my first step probably needs to be identification. This is where my eyes roll back in my head and I start drooling on myself in confusion.

I want to get a good plan going that can obviously be modified later. But, I don't have a clue where to begin. If you all could point me to some necessary reading, plan of action, videos, a post on this thread or all of the above, I would be most grateful.

I'm willing to put in the hours to learn, but I'm presently attempting to devour the entire elephant and not sure where to find the first manageable bite. Ready to grow up and be a big boy when it comes to lawn care.

Thanks,
Chappy

P.S. Yard dimensions are: 10,800SF lot | 7,120 SF of actual grass | 3,350 SF front | 3,770 SF back.

Hi @ChappyEight
Welcome to TLF !
For an introduction, check out this thread https://thelawnforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1595
If I were you, I would start with tier 1 to learn the basics and get some experience.
Youtube is another great resource. Ryan Knorr and GrassDaddy both have excellent introductory videos as well as more advanced topics. The Lawn Care Nut also has some great introductory videos.

You will have lots of questions along the way, so feel free to post as needed.

Welcome to The Forum... I would also say YouTube.. Ryan Knorr, grassdaddy, lawncarenut.. And then if the grass bug really hits you hard.. You have to watch the grass Factor tons and tons of information that Matt gives out. You can also log into his weekly Sunday show ( 5pm west time )and ask him some questions live on youtube.. you can also post pictures here. Again welcome to the forum

Thanks guys, really appreciate the warm welcome. Also, very nice to see some fellow Hoosiers here.

I just mowed for the first time tonight and... well... there is some work to be done for sure. I'm hoping to take some pics tomorrow to get some advice (bare spots, weeds, exposed roots, etc.). Should I post that stuff in this thread or start a new thread? I'm also going to take @g-man's advice and post a list of my goals. Again, should that be here or in a different thread?

Thanks again!

Thanks. Just don't want to spam the forum. I'll get something put together tomorrow. Again, really appreciate the help.

P.S. Really thankful this storm is rolling through AFTER I mowed today...
