So I think I'm going aerate this weekend. I have some really hard section of the yard and grass is still thin there.

Sure thing! Are you going to do some sanding over top to fill in the holes? I know you have quite a bit of sanding experience.

If you can afford to water it then go for it!! I'm debating on aerating and leveling in 2 weeks.

I'm not going sand, I want to but don't have the time. I probably won't water, Rain is in the forecast for a few days.

Aeration without sanding should be just fine. I say u go for it!

I just aerated mine. The guy at the rental place "recommended against it" in the summer because it cuts the roots. I told him the best time to aerate is when the grass is actively growing. Nothing, in my opinion, is better for the lawn than core aerating and topdressing with a good compost. But make sure you put down some pre-m because it will stir up the weeds.

and finally, make sure the ground has been soaked the day before as to allow for maximum depth.

my fert n squirt co did my aeration in May and did NOT even suggest another pre-em application. i've just never had weed pressure..(excluding bermuda ) .....guess i'm fortunate.

There have been several studies conducted on how aeration effects pre-m. The consensus seems to be that it has no ill effects on the pre-m.
