Sorry if this isn't the correct forum...
As mentioned elsewhere, I'm completely reworking my front yard. I've re-graded it and have no topsoil at all right now. I'm going to be bringing in topsoil in the next week.

My plan is to install Zoysia sod, but it's apparently too late in Raleigh NC (zone 7b) to put it down this year. So, I need to put down something to ensure that I still have topsoil come spring. I'm sure my neighbors would also prefer something other than bare dirt too.

I've read numerous articles on seeding with annual rye, but I get conflicting messages about how suitable it is for this purpose. Several articles suggested that in some places it doesn't die off in the springtime and can interfere with new grass.

Can anyone provide insights as to the suitability of rye for this purpose in this location? Are there other, better options?

Thank you for your help.

You CAN lay sod right now if you want but it really won't take off until Spring. Granted I have Bermuda, but mine was laid in January and it did just fine come Spring time, I can't see Zoysia being too much different.

With our mild Winters, it should still be fine and may even start rooting a little if we get a warm snap.

Here is a link about it. Super Sod

Yup. The annual rye can be nuked prior to sod but would likely be smothered just by laying sod over it. Also note that annual rye is awful to mow with a rotary mower. Makes a mess!

Mightyquinn - I spoke with SuperSod late last week - that's what started this conversation. Alas, they said they wouldn't have more Zoysia till spring. (Actually, they can still special order one particular kind, but it's not one of the ones we'd choose.)

Are they the only sod producer you have called?

I would wait until spring/early summer to sod zoysia. Not saying it cant work but any damage may take up to a full season to recover. Dont ask me how I know. Which cultivar are you desiring?
