Relocated to Texas last summer, directly between Austin and Houston. All the substrate is 95% sand
Have sodded the front half so far with TifTuf and it’s doing well. The sod around the pool we built in back is Celebration. Celebration and TifTuf were near identical in green up timing this spring. I like Celebration color, but TifTuf is better IMO.
With the big backyard I decided to do a putting green project. Started in January. Removed existing 2000 sq ft of grass. Using the USGA guide as a reference, put in about 150ft of corrugated pipe with drainage rock installed on top and the base layer or the putting surface. Packed.
Reworking the backyard, used existing substrate for the next layer. Brought on appx. 20 cu. yds. Finally, the top 3-4 inches is sand mixed with peat moss and some organic material. Spent the last few weeks, rolling, packing, adding some fertilizer, watering. Repeat.
With the mole issues this neighborhood has, I double lined 10ft out from the green area all the way around with chicken wire down to 24 inches. Also, have been treating the problems regularly with grub control. Though, Its only effective as my neighbors that aren’t doing the same.
For grass, I looked at a few options available locally. The ultra dwarfs available being Sunday, Champion, TifEagle, MiniVerde, TifDwarf. For reference, each of these were in the ballpark of $3-$5 per sq ft. Needing in the ballpark of 1200sq ft for the surface. They also wouldn’t be ready until May.
I saw that Tahoma31 was in some greens trials recently so did some research there. I had some Tahoma31 at the old house and liked it. Found it about an hour away. Decided to pull the trigger and layed the outside fringe, and about half the putting surface with two pallets. Going to pick up another pallet next week. Thought about sprigging, but the cost per pallet and the small area, just made more sense to sod.
Should be interesting to see with enough input, is this a viable option for a green surface in south central/east Texas. More to come.
