I wanted to do a Bewitched reno this season but the wife squashed that. My plan B is to overseed but since kbg doesn't overseed well I'm thinking prg.

Since I'm unfamiliar with prg, and individual cultivars don't get talked about as much, can someone give me some direction on a prg seed to choose please? I'll be mowing at 3/4" or below.

Any feedback is appreciated.

I too used champion gq in an overseed. It is best bang for the buck I found anywhere. I think I paid $75 for #50 shipped from Hancock Seed. Looks like its $89 now. Still a heck of a deal.

With that said, I also used Pangea PRG for a spot seed the prior season and was impressed, too. Really dark, if that is what you are looking for. In fact I think this is one of the main reasons I decided a full reno was needed.... it was so much darker than the old part of my lawn (old school no-mix), it drove me nuts.

I've always also been a fan of the PHD Perennial Rye blend put out by DLF Seed that uses all high NTEP rated varieties.

When i bought 2 years ago it was Hancock, Aspire, and Thrive which were all highly rated in the last NTEP report with very dark color(7+) across the board.

Problem is when i went in to get a bag this year from my local shop it had like 2.5% other crop and 1% weed, in it or something ridiculous, i didnt notice until it was in my car...took it right back in. So not sure what thats about.

How do you guys find the Champions GQ color? Their tech sheet uses the words "Vibrant green color" which scares me. To me that mean bright green, aka not dark.

When you start over seeding a KBG lawn with PRG do you have to do it every couple years? Or does the PRG eventually take over or does the KBG eventually take over? @jha4aamu Do you keep parts of your lawn 100% KBG or did you over seed the whole thing? I am scared to pull the trigger on something like this and then having to reno back to KBG.

From my experience it was not as dark as Pangea, which is the only thing I have to compare it to, but since it's a blend, not a single cultivar, the mix will change overtime. The components of the blend I have seen have been Sideways, Harrier, SR4650, SR4600 , Cutter II, and Zoom. There very well may be others, too. A quick search of the NTEP shows most of these are lighter than some of the darkest cultivars. That being said, I wouldn't expect lime green or anything... but if super dark is your priority, you may consider something else.
