OK, so I've bought nearly 50 bags of miscellaneous fertilizer during the end of season clearance deals. In an ideal world I would add another 15-20 bags of Bay State fertilizer next spring. What I'm trying to wrap my head around is finding a way to efficiently store all of this stuff. My preference would be to keep all of it in my 10x12 shed along with all of my lawn equipment, but in my experience the bags start to become an avalanche risk after I stack about 5 bags on top of each other.

So how do you guys store your lawn supply stash? Is there a clever solution that anyone is using?

I don't have any clever tricks, but I stack them up with the pile leaning ever-so-slightly against the wall. The trick here is to very slightly distribute the material in the bag so that the away-from-the-wall side of the bag is a tiny bit fuller than the other side, at least for the first bag or two placed in the pile. I'm able to go 8-high with Bay State Fertilizer without any trouble, and would feel pretty confident putting another 3-4 bags on top of that.

The goal here isn't to actually have the wall taking the weight of the fertilizer, but just stabilizing the pile.

When bagged items are placed on a square pallet, they are usually arranged 5-per-layer, with layers alternating in their direction. This gives a very stable placement; ideally with all bags leaning a tiny bit inwards. When you go pick up your Bay State Fertilizer from Quincy, check out the way the bags are stacked on the pallet.

I do this for bagged products too

I'll also store the bags in these storage bins, especially urea - as it seems to clump with any dampness at all.

Most of the time, though, I fill these storage totes up with DAP/MOP I buy a ton at a time in bulk and stack them along the wall.

Actually, I know what you mean. That is how the water softener salt bags are stacked at the big box stores.

FWIW, this is what I have now. I'm just thinking about how I can best add a bunch of Bay State to the mix next year in addition to a potential new mower with a 30" deck. Fitting one or the other isn't a problem, but I was hoping there a better way to do both.

If I have a lot of bags like that, I would try to stack them 2x2 alternating the direction they are stacked as it will be a more stable than just stacking them on top of each other. I think using the wall to stabilize it is a great idea too!!
