Hello. I am kinda new to caring for a lawn and Im having some issues and not sure what direction to go in.
I have about 10,000 sq.ft. of centipede. It has not been taken care of in a few years. Last summer I started mowing more regularly and dethatching and this year has been much of the same. The weeds are not too bad, I usually go around pulling them. This year I had mainly facelis, yellow eyed grass and some poa annua.
At the beginning of may I planted seeds in bare area and over seeded in a couple of other areas. I can see the seeds have sprouted in just about all the bare areas I planted them in. As far as watering I water the seeds everyday keeping the soil moist for them and while I have the hose out I hit any areas of the lawn that look very dry.
The last couple weeks I noting the lawn is growing very unevenly. I can see areas where the grass looks full and healthy and right next to it will be an area where the grass appears to not even have grown since I last cut it. I have many areas like this.
I have a front and back lawn. In both areas the alot of the middle seem to be very dried out. The blades dont seem to turn brown but they kinda curl and the color is different and the blades look skinny compared to the healthy areas. Basically its like a FrankenLawn.
I honestly dont know if Im watering too much or too little. I do it by hand with a garden hose. If I see an area that looks very dry I try to water it and it will look ok but the next day its dry again, even if I spend 20-30 minutes watering the area. And the thing is its only in patches. I have good areas, dry areas, and grass that looks healthy but not growing as tall as the rest all bunched up. And the whole lawn is like this, there is no consistency.
One question I have is if my soil is very compacted will I need to water more often? This lawn seems like its always dry and needs water every day. The other day I let a sprinkler go for 3 hours, next day dry, curled skinny blades again. I water early in the morning and if its very dry I have been going around where I planted seeds and watering again just to keep the soil moist. I know centipede needs 1 inch a week or half inch twice a week but this lawn is just always dry.
It also hasnt rained here in about 3-4 weeks and the next week will be the same with temps over 90
I know it probably needs to be aerated but that is probably not going to happen because I dont have the means or funds to rent a machine to punch a million holes into the ground.
I have not used fertilizer. I have used spectricide products for weeds and insects. I also have a mole who loves caster oil and poison worms and peanuts and the smell of onions, peppers and garlic. Yes Im being very sarcastic but I have made my lawn as undesirable to moles as I possible can and they will not leave. Last week I thought I finally killed him and 3 days later another shows up.
Sorry for the long first post but I been working on this lawn since February and its driving me nuts.
