Should Gas Blowers be Banned?

I'm not a tree hugger or believe in climate change or warming, because the Earths weather has always changed for millions of years, and always will....These machines are probably doing more harm by polluting the air in 3 ways...1, by the 2 stroke engines, gas and oil mixture exhaust and smell.... 2, by lifting more dust in the air that has already settled.... 3,
The Intense noise, enough to drive you crazy, even with the windows and doors closed, especially when 2-3 are going at the same time...My other gripe is the fact they spread weed seeds and POA to surrounding properties... I use a battery blower, and find its plenty powerful and creates no pollution, lifts much less dust in the air, and much less noise...
I rest my case....

I mostly use a Rigid jobsite battery blower to clean off my mowers but it doesn't hold a candle to my Husqvarna backpack blower for cleaning up debris and leaves. Every tool has its use and place. I won't be getting rid of it anytime soon. The battery blowers might work good on a small NJ lawn, but if you're doing it all day as a job or taking care of large yards, nothing beats having a proper stinky, noisy, dusty blower that will get the job done efficiently and get you out of the heat and humidity quicker.

ehh..

My battery blower is great for blowing out the garage, porches, and driveway. Thats pretty much it. If you need to blow leaves in the fall/pine needles etc off of a larger area, I couldnt imaging using anything but a powerful gas blower. Im sure batteries will keep getting better, though. Just not pratical for larger lawns or commercial applications yet.

From your reasoning, I am going with no. You said you are not worried about pollution affecting climate change, so I am not sure why using a 2 stroke engine matters. The wind lifts far more dust than any leaf blower would so I am not sure why that matters either. Saying a gas blower spreads poa and weed seeds, well so would a battery powered blower. I think the real complaint you have is the third one. You think they are too loud. Yes, they are indeed loud, but no that's not enough reason for them to be banned.

I will say being a gas lawn equipment guy I'm not a fan of the battery equipment. I will say in my neighborhood the houses are close together and mostly everyone has a lawn company doing their property. It's annoying on a Saturday commercial grade leaf blowers going half the day multiple at a time. I use my leaf blower I'm done in about 4 minutes

the utterly baffling thing is how in the hell can a car with a 6 liter engine making >500hp be almost silent but a 200cc generator, lawnmower, leaf blower, whatever is louder than a Harley with an aftermarket exhaust. I've watched videos where people try to add mufflers and it somehow does almost nothing and also restricts power a great deal.
stupidest thing ever.
imagine being briggs and stratton and going out of business to battery devices because you never spent the money to properly quiet these things

It’s about weight. 2-strokes are generally lighter but suffer with any flow restriction a decent muffler would cause. They’ve come a long way in the past 10 or so years in the outboard industry, but I still would want to carry a 4-stroke all over the yard.

no more polluting than the cars and other appliances in our daily lives. The dust gets lifted by wind, and electric blowers too.. they can spread weed seeds just as good as a gas blower or Mother Nature.
And noise is subjective..

So nah, you are just complaining. If you don’t like the noise and smell, go electric and go inside. They don’t offer the power and ease that a high end gas blower does and some of us don’t have time to piddle around when we are outside cleaning up.

I knew this topic would ruffle a few feathers.... Of course, to each their own.... But don't be surprised if your local towns start to ban the gas blowers.... Mine hasn't, and its mostly all-residential high-end homes, and very few are DIYERS for the landscaping...So, 6 days a week, there's always a brigade of gas leaf blowers roaring and polluting the air and quiet... Not to mention in the Fall for leaf clean-up, even worse....So, the next time you clean your own windows and screens, think of how all the black soot got on there, if you live in a nice quiet residential area...

I think you should consider upgrading your windows? I have Pella windows and they are great at blocking out all the shrieking children in my hood.

I have the following blowers: electric, battery, gas handheld, and gas backpack. When I break out my Echo PB9010, I absolutely love the power, smell, and noise (103 db). It is by far one of my favorite tools. It makes me smile every time I use it. I would move if my HOA banned it.

As a courtesy to my neighbors, I only mow on Tuesday and Friday...never on the weekends.

Absolutely not. Gas powered is more reliable than battery powered equipment, especially small engines. Wait till you have to buy the batteries when they don’t charge. The batteries will be as much as the lawnmower or backpack blower. The landscaping companies would never be able to get anything done if everything was run on batteries.

The lithium mining that going on right now are horrid conditions for the people that are doing it. We would fix one problem for another one.

Well, I had my 80volt blower for at least 6 yrs on the same battery, have at least 5k sq. or more to do...The battery never runs down for lawn clean up, only after hedge clean up when I have to put it on high speed...Also have a B&D 20volt hedge clipper for at least 12 years, with the same battery, still going strong, and use the same battery for my string trimmer that's even older...These batteries go right on charge no matter how long they have been used, and disconnected right after a full charge...Also have Porter Cable Battery Drill, Led light, and Impact driver that use the same battery for years, and no problem with them, even when rotating my tires...
But I still have my gas Toro recycler mower...which I'll will stay with, still starts on first pull...Almost forgot, years ago I went with Plug In Electric Chain Saws, not battery, which are terrific and still have.... So there....

Knowing the the State of Washington and King County where I live, they will ban gas powered tools in any way they can with cars to follow. I am not for it, though I own some battery powered equipment. Most know the pros and cons of using battery vs. gas tools but the political winds in our state lead a war against fossil fuels of any kind.

But when you consider the entire life cycle it might not be clear and of course the following points are not brought up in the argument. In a separate argument they are though with even more laws prohibiting the disposal of batteries and requiring great expense, cumbersome processes, and VERY well paid employees and contractors to deal with it.

Comparing a rare earth mine to the keystone pipeline is a common meme.

  • Significant Environmental Challenges in Battery Production
Battery production, especially lithium-ion batteries, has a substantial environmental impact due to resource-intensive processes. The extraction of raw materials like lithium, cobalt, and nickel contributes to habitat destruction, water depletion, and greenhouse gas emissions. The carbon footprint of manufacturing these batteries is higher than traditional technologies, making sustainable production methods essential.
  • Environmental Risks of Improper Battery Disposal
Improper disposal of batteries, particularly lithium-ion ones, leads to soil, water, and air contamination through leaching of toxic substances, landfill fires, and release of hazardous gases. Effective recycling technologies and stricter global disposal regulations are critical to mitigating these risks and reducing environmental damage.

The point I'm trying to make is that the pro's use 2-3 blowers all going at once with a gas edger, and riding gas mower...The noise is unbearable, not to mention the dust they are creating and air pollution...You diyers, have just 1 gas blower and or edger and gas mower, but they are not running all at the same time as these landscapers are....They can be all running for a half hr. at a time, and then hop to the next neighbor's yard, that can be right next to you.... Forget about the Fall leaf clean up...Even louder and longer....
