My lawn has some fairly large brown patches after the winter. The grass was in great shape last fall, no bare spots or dead areas. I put down pre-emergent in April. Is there anything I can do to get the grass to grow in these areas now? Or do I need to wait until Fall? Thanks!

Is this damage from your dog or neighbor's dogs?

I don't have any personal experience with seeding after applying a pre-m, but I have read recently it can be done if you break up the top layer of soil aggressively and seed heavily. Maybe even incorporate a bit of fresh top soil in those spots.

Looks like mold or fungus, but hard to tell just from the picture. You're in MA, I don't know what kind of snowfall you had this year, weather, moisture, etc.

Your grass looks more like a clumping type, so I'm assuming it's mostly PRG/TTTF which won't spread. My hunch is it's likely a northern mix. I know quite a few members have issues with perennial rye and winter kill.

In just the bad areas I would probably lightly loosen the soil and seed either perennial rye or tall fescue, knowing that it may die in the heat of the summer or have weed issues and focus on preventing this in future seasons.

Ideally you would have a high percentage to KBG that you could push to spread and fill the areas.

The brown spots seem to be the areas where most of the snow from my snow blower gets dropped. I don't put salt or snow melt on my driveway. I aerated and overseeded last fall. There are a lot of dog walkers in my neighborhood so some of it could be due to them.
