Reel Mowing KBG - Monostand or Mix?

Hey All,
I have been reel mowing my front yard for years (see recent pics). I just have whatever sod the builder put in here in Utah 12-13 years ago and it looks pretty good but whatever grass type I have doesn't spread and repair itself very well. It also drives me crazy that it is not uniform in many places. Some spots the blades get thick and others its pretty fine. Some spots are dark green and others its a bit pale.

I have been debating an overseed and adding a new KBG cultivar into the mix to help with some more aggressive spreading and repair characteristics. I have also been debating nuking the whole thing and starting over with a KBG monostand or an elite mix. I want to continue to reel mow (currently around .5" to .75"). I also have the option to just nuke the park strip and experiment with a full reno there without risking the main lawn while I figure things out. The tree stumps in the pictures are now gone so I have a clean park strip to play with.

Any suggestions on a monostand cultivar or mix that would be great for reel mowing in Utah climate? I have no issue with irrigation and feel like the disease pressure we get here is pretty low due to the lack of humidity.

🤣 Thanks! My wife thinks I am crazy for even considering doing anything...but we are all a little bit sick at this stage right? Does a KBG overseed require less time or effort than a full reno? Or is it about the same?

I would reno the parkstrip first and see how you like the new grass cultivar. If you really enjoy it you can do the rest of the yard.

I'm in the same boat with my backyard. I've done renos in the past but I'm unsure if the effort is actually worth the finished product.
Hitting the park strip hard has been the plan for awhile but I also want to help the main yard look better in the meantime. I did some minor levelling in the spring and on the edges where I brought up the grade a little it just never filled in. I thought about using some PRG to fill in the other spots (Barenburg has a spreading variety) but I am afraid it wont really match the rest of the yard very well in color or blade type.

What type of seed have you renovated with?

First, it looks great. If you've been reel mowing for 11 years and those are your results, then I'm confident that a full reno with newer grass isn't going to be a problem if you go down that route. But do you have to is the question.

Have you done a soil test lately? it is possible that you're deficient in something and just an additive might bring you into where you want to be without a full reno. Considering the gains you're looking for (aka dark perfection) you'll want to do one anyway before you reno so that you remove any future questions.

As to how to do post here? A lawn journal would be ideal for a full story over time. Considering where you're starting from and the ability you have already, it could be a great journal for someone looking to go from great to top of the list.
