I have a patch/area in my lawn with St Augustine grass that simply will not grow or thicken up at all. It is not noticeable from the street but I have watched it closely for over a year and it has never grown outward to thicken up.

This particular area has a lot of shade and has drainage problems. I'm wondering which is more likely the root cause of my poor growth?

How much is "a lot of shade?" Does the area ever get direct sunlight?

Here's a picture. The area in question is to the left of this tree. Areas with similar shade are growing exceptionally well though

That's significantly better than I expected. Any chance there's construction debris hidden below the surface? Competition from the tree?
Possible but not likely. It's not that noticeable from the street (where photo taken), but when you look closer it's not very think and it just flat out won't fill in.

It has been years since construction last occurred on the property.

You may also see the beginnings of a low spot. It leads to standing water
