Properly watering in compacted clay soil

I have read many articles and forum posts and understand deep infrequent watering is the proper way to water. I have heard people watering once a week. My question is...how can I do this with clay soil? If I water for more than 10 minutes I have puddles in my lawn and have already developed some moss where there is bare patches. Should I be aerating frequently to reduce compaction? If so, how often once a month, couple months? My lawn is just a year old and is still pretty thin and stiff. I live in the PNW and temps are right around 80 degrees now. Any advice would be appreciated.

You have to water a little bit at a time, let it soak, then repeat until you get to the necessary amount of precipitation. My Rachio controller does this automatically. It's a great feature.
