Simple question and it is mostly spawned by the lots of discussion on leveling.

Got my pro plugger, started plugging just to test. During the process, I realize some plugs fall below the surface.

Is this a result of me doing it wrong?
Is it a result of me doing it wrong?
Is this completely normal and I should just plug, move on and stop worrying?

What is the depth most plug at? Mine came with 2, 4, 6 and I figured 6" since that is what we expect for root depth, right?

While iv never used a pro plugger before I think the cup cutter at a golf course is the same basic concept , and it sounds like it may be the same problem I had when I first used it

When I would get a low plug it was usually I had been pounding it into the ground and pulling it right out, that would leave dirt in the old hole and an empty spot in the plug I pulled

To avoids that I just press down on the cup cutter and twist back and forth after it's all the way in the ground, that gets me a nice clean plug that usually Isent low or high.

And if it is still low? I just grab sand outa the bunker near the green to make up the rest :D

As for depth? I was always told the roots are twice the length of the grass blade... or was it 3 times... anyway can't go wrong with as deep as u can go other then more work to pull each plug, hope this helps a little :)

I always use the 4" depth. And I make sure I've watered the day or 2 before so the soil sticks together. If it's dry, it'll crumble or not be as compact. I've had good success with using this approach. As a bonus, it's helped me find some (un)treasures at the 4 inch depth... rocks, etc. that I can then dig out and improve that area.
