Glad to finally participate on this site, I've been following for quite some time now and have learned a great deal! Started getting interested in my yard about a year and a half ago, found the LCN on YouTube which led me to Grassdaddy and then here. I don't have the time to fully renovate this year, but I am in the process of doing a well planned overseed including several bare areas. I have read several articles that say pre-germinating seed can be very advantageous, but I have not seen anyone here discuss it. Just curious if anyone has any experience and success. Glad to be aboard!

I tried mixing KBG seed with wet sand and placing it in a plastic bag for 6 days. After 6 days, I spread the sand/seed mixture on top of soil in a plastic pot. It ended up taking just as long to germinate as the non-"treated" seed, so it didn't help one bit. Maybe soaking it in water would work better.

Yes, I've done this and it does work. It will shave a few days off germination time, but I'm not sure it's worth the effort.

The key to doing this is you want to flush the seed thoroughly. Load up the seed you want to prime in a container with a small hole(s) at the bottom to drain. Run water through and thoroughly soak the seed. After the water drains from the hole, repeat the process a few times. Then you can let it sit and stir once or twice a day so it doesn't rot. I believe the idea was to remove the chemicals that inhibit the germination process. After all is done and a few days pass you can spread the seed out on some type of paper to partially dry so it can be ready to spread again.

by the way, this was done with KBG seed and a solo cup.
