Hi All,
I live in Southern NH and my lawn needs some repair. (see https://thelawnforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2517) My plan is to overseed in August/September as the temperature begin to decline.

I will be bringing in some loam for low spots and renting a Line seeder. I'm going with a *** Fescue mix. (screw Ryegrass forever  ). Is this something I can start in Mid August or do I need to wait until Labor day?

Fall overseeding all depends on temperature. If its a mild august and the soil temp drops below 70 you can start. If its still hot any seedlings that come up will get roasted.

Why the slit seeder rental? If you're bringing in soil anyways you could just rough up the bare patches, spread the seed with a broadcast or by hand then cover it up with a bit of top soil. Always looking to save $

Than OnyxLawn for replying. I've got a half acre that needs over seeding, and the Loam will just only be used on a few spots. I'd rather spend the 60 bux and do it right than go through all the effort and have it fail because I went cheap on a rental.

I'd definitely target late August or earlier (preferably earlier if you can do it). It's sort of tough, because you still get significant heat in Southern NH in August (last year, it was 95 in Maine for a while around that time I think), but your average first frost date is probably in early October, which doesn't give you much time to get good root establishment before Winter.
