I don't know if I've heard of any cultural practices that reduce nutsedge. Knowing the way that it spreads, if you're not using herbicides, I think you're going to have to concede that part of your lawn.

Nutsedge likes a lot of water. Can you let the soil dry out between irrigation? Here in DE it has rained and poured for weeks. If it's the same where you are in South Jersey, you have a battle ahead. Once it gets established, it's basically impossible to eradicate without herbicides. Try to keep it as dry as you dare.

If you can find the original nutsedge stem you can dig down and remove any nutlets that are present and then can locate any offshooting rhizomes and remove them as well which will do a ton in remove what you have and preventing anymore from showing up, going to be a little more labor intensive but if you want to stay away from chemicals elbow grease is really your only other option
