Damn the torpedoes full speed ahead.

That’s my $0.02
Yea i was afraid of that. thought it might be torpedo. i guess ill go stock on up on quinclorac
+1 on the torpedograss ID.
Welcome to TLF. It won’t always be bad news.
Thanks guys. i decided to glyphosate the area and resod the spots when im sure the torpedo is gone
Do you have Saint Augustine? Quinclorac is my go-to product against torpedograss but it can't be applied to SA.
Unfortunately, there is no herbicide for controlling torpedo grass in SA other than glyphosate ☠. Fortunately it blends in well with SA.
So, here's the story. I bought this house 2 years ago, and when i got it, the front yard was about 30% weak SA and 70% weak centipede, both of which were being shaded by a few giant hickory trees. I had those cut down soon after i moved in, and since, the st aug (with a little fert help) is strong and is covering about 70% of the yard now. The remaining centipede continues to look like crap and i hope the st aug takes it over completely in short order. Luckily, the torpedo is in the centipede portion and thus i dont feel any way about glypho nuking that area, Maybe ill buy a pro plugger and start moving some SA plugs into the dead spots?

Back yard is a hot mess. weak centipede salad bar. am considering doing a kill and buying Bimini bermuda. Have a few test plugs down and its soooo pretty
Also, ive read that some people on this forum use Dismiss NXT to control torpedo in SA?
I haven’t tried Dismiss or Dismiss NXT because I am a *****. There are a lot of safer options for weeds in SA. Killing torpedo grass in SA is like chemo therapy, it brings the patient to the brink of death to get rid of the bad stuff.

Good luck!

SA/Centipede mix... Torpedograss... that sounds like my frontyard before I nuked it. Do you live in Florida?

Do you think just using quinclorac would be better? Or do you have another suggestion?

I don’t have a better suggestion RE chemical control of torpedograss. Glyphosate or quinclorac both require multiple applications and both will damage the centipede. It’s a tough situation.

To the best of my knowledge, the long term strategy that works is keeping your desired turf in good shape to prevent torpedo from breaking through, but I don’t know if that means committing to sod or not. Maybe if you do 3+ rounds of chemical control it will buy you enough time for SA plugs to take over. Not sure. I would be inclined to consider sod. Because I’d rather have a lawn than a project.

Go Trojans! 😁

Definitely agree on the long term plan. I sprayed the first application of glyphosate yesterday. Luckily, it's a pretty small area. I guess I'll see what happens in that area. I dont mind the centipede getting ruined, as I dont want that anyway, id prefer the SA to take that area over as well. We just have so many projects going on, and 3 children under age 5, thus the will to rip it all up and properly re-sod is quite low lol.

Oh boy! Yeah, that’s a lot to contend with. If you do go the plug route, I do suggest buying them. You get a fantastic root bundle from the tray. Pulling St. Aug plugs is hit and miss.
If it's a small area you could also paint the glyphosate on the torpedograss. If it were my yard I would spray it all out in the bad spots and fix with sod pieces. Sometimes you can get individual sod pieces at the big box store. It helps to know which particular cultivar you have but I don't think it is as critical with SA as the shorter cut warm-season turfs. I could be wrong about that though.
