So far this summer I have learned that I strongly prefer KBG over Perennial Rye.

My lawn as it stands now is a pretty even mix of 4 KBG varieties, and Perennial Rye.

The blue grass in my turf went to seed quickly at the end of May, the seed heads died back, and it's looking soft and green again. It has excellent texture and density.

The rye was later going to seed, and much slower to recover. It's giving a brown quality to the lawn in places as the seed stalks die back, it's stemmy, and thin. It also was hit harder by disease earlier in the season, whereas the bluegrass was hardly affected.

This fall, I will be reclaiming approx 250 sqft of a garden bed, and will be seeding it with the same bluegrass blend. I'd like to have an even appearance for my whole lawn with out doing a full kill, although, it's in the back of my mind that that could be the best option.

My neighbours' lawn that I seeded with 100% KBG last fall after a glypho kill is starting to look better than mine too!

I've found this in my googling:

https://www.seedworldusa.com/products/msm-turf-herbicide-2-oz

It is labeled for many things, including annual and perennial rye. Does anyone have experience and can comment on it's efficacy? I can't find many reviews about specifically removing rye from blue grass.

The rate for use in kbg is not to exceed 0.5oz per acre. Yes acre. Or 0.01oz/ksqft. That's really hard to do.

FYI, Ware used this in killing his PRG from the winter overseed over dormant Bermuda. A very sad day. Let's have a moment of silence please.

This is a very active herbicide, with effects beyond the initial application. 0.5 oz per acre is the amount allowed per YEAR on KBG. It stays in the soil for a long time. Hope your soil is not sandy and you do not have roots of trees that you like extending into the lawn. When I am measuring out this product for less than an acre, the amount is 0.15-0.30 grams per 1000 sq ft. This product is not very forgiving of being applied heavy in one area or else being spot sprayed either. 1 oz will kill trees and 2 oz can give you dirt for over a year.

When I was reading the label and saw the rate, I was afraid it meant is was not very forgiving.

I've heard all I need to hear to not use it.

So the question begs, are there any cultural practices that can be employed to encourage KBG domination over a couple growing seasons, or is a glyphosate reno the easiest way to achieve a +95% KBG stand?
