This thread reminds me of why we are drilling a well for our irrigation. I called well digger this morning. House is literally on a small private island and well are shallow and average 25 to 30' deep. Quoted me $1,800 with 1.5 hp pump etc. Island residents without a well pay $300 plus per month with irrigation. Worth every cent.

I'm hoping at some point to contact a well drilled for an estimate. I'm in a borough it haven't found an ordinance yet banning it. Might have to plant a few trees and find someone to do it at night :D

The conventional "1 inch per week" rule has been on my mind lately. I want the top inch to be dry with the soil below uniformly damp. Not even moist but like a well wrung-out towel.

Of course, it depends on the environment, but do you think that many of us can get by with less watering? I bet I can up in New England...
Zoysia grass in New England would get you that. It's only green about 5 months of the year, and lower water use when it is than a cool-season grass. Lol.

Just got the latest bill and it was $340 amd they do tie in the sewage as well. At my old house i had a meter put in just for the irrigation and pool and although it cost me almost $2500 to get the city to do it it was worth it. Thought here i wouldn't need it with the smaller yard and no pool but i might start looking into it. Just added 2k more sod with another zone this month and 75 trees with drip irrigation so i expect July to be $450ish. Gotta figure something out lol.

250 during peak summer, with no irrigation the other 7-8 months of the year because of all the rain and cloudy days its usually 100-150 depending. But thats also including sewer.
A large portion of my bill is just the base rate for water and sewer + fee's/taxes which is like 60-70 bucks before i've taken a drop of water or flushed a single toilet.

Yea that is not the norm for sure. For example a buddy just drilled a well in wine country out here, and most wells cost 20-25k each to drill. If they cant get water or enough pressure out of the hole guess what? You get to pay another 20-25k for them to try again. But wells are necessary, because there is no city plumbing out there.

We are kinda lucky here in this area the water table is fairly close to our soil surface and we have this crazy layer of sand about 4ft under the soil. So we elected to drive a point well and use that... basically whatever the cost to run the pump motor is all we have to pay for the water we irrigate with. Of course you can't drink any of that because eww... but it's great for the lawn!

How much are you paying, or how many gallons are you using, each month for water? Our normal usage is between 4-5k gallons during the year, but naturally increases during the summer. Still, it seems odd that it would have jumped to over 8k this past month (bill was a little over $100). I don't have an in-ground irrigation system and only occasionally use sprinklers for the lawn. I'm curious how much water others use, especially you who have dedicated irrigation systems.

What your average water bill? If I leave my sprinkler system to water everyday 5 days a week (M-F), my bill is usually around $190 - $200. I have sandy soil, so watering 2 days a week like most of you do, doesn't cut it for my lawn. I haven't had it on for the last 10 days (rained 8 of the last 10 days) but I am trying to go M-W-F after all of this rain and see how it affects my lawn and bill. I roughly figured that watering 5 days a week for 4 weeks (20 days) costs me about $7.50 a day.

Does water bill mean anything since every system is different, my controller skips ‘runs’ when rain is forecast, and it adjusts to the season/weather?

Here in Toronto Canada I pay $4.60 / 1 cubic metre = 1,000 litres = 264 US gallons. It works out to about $15.00 per run but I only have 140 sq. m. of lawn, a drip flowerbed, and to planters on drip.

That’s weird, though a thread was just emailed to me as a new update. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I need to put an inline meter on the irrigation line. But 11 zones for 30 min, times an average of 6 heads at 3gpm each , plus the drip zone is right at 6k gallons per watering. This is for one acre. Luckily we are near a swamp with no shortage of water. My electric bill to power the well probably cost more than many here pay to irrigate.

INTERESTING Stat.…One inch of rain falling on 1 acre of ground is equal to about 27,154 gallons and weighs about 113 tons.

I am in the same boat here, I have 1 acre and had the trees removed and this year decided to really work on getting a nice lawn. I got a glimpse of what my water bill could be last year when I had to run the water 5x a day for 3 months to ensure my Centipede grass germinated and grew. My water bill had never been over $40 before that; during that time it jumped to over $500...oh and that was for just the front yard which had 4 drip zones and 17K sq ft of turf.

I got a well installed this year because I knew there was no way I was going to spend that kind of money every month to water both the front and back yard. I still don't know what the total monthly water usage will be because I am still installing the sprinkler system for the back yard but so far I am averaging around 30K gallons per week for just the front. I'm guessing the back yard will at least double that which would have put my water bill up to around $600/mo during the summer.

When everything is done I will have around 20 zones and will probably average 10K+ gallons per month. The power bill increase was expected but still unwelcome.

I live in Lemon Grove, Ca, Zone 10b, TTTF. Its prolly cheaper to use bottled water for irrigation than city water. Watering only 2,300 sqft is $315 for June and our hottest month isn't til August. I use an irrometer/tensiometer to precisely track my irrigation needs and it still cost an arm and a leg. Our average rainfall from June thru Sept is only 0.5 inches, if any. All my neighbors have switched to hardscape many years ago, but they are a little older and on fixed incomes. One neighbor catches stray water in his shower with a bucket for his veggie garden. Its an expensive hobby, but the neighbors glowing comments are all worth it.

I live in Salt Lake City, Utah. 3,000 square feet of lawn + probably another 1,000 square feet of flowers beds (maybe more). Worst water bill I've seen is about $120 per month but most of my monthly bills even in May, June and September come in under $100.
