I have a Jacobsen PGM 22 and I want to increase the HOC to the max, approx .438 inches. Do I need to worry about precise measurements?

I was hoping that I would not require a height adjustment bar or similar tool, since I am raising the HOC to the max.

I would just verify that the HOC is even across the bed knife. You can do this check with a sturdy piece of metal or wood and an adjustable screw or bolt.

I made my own HOC bar with a piece of steel square tubing, long machine screw, and a wingnut to lock the screw in place.

Nothing wrong with straightedges and rulers.

Whether or not you can see an imperfect adjustment has a lot to do with how level the lawn is, and a little to do with how precise the measuring tools are. The lower you cut, the more precise you will need to be.
