Mason sand vs “cushion sand”

Went by my local landscape and rock store today. Asked what they had for lawn leveling sand. I was looking to get normal mason sand, but they mentioned that they had some “cushion” sand that was more commonly used.

I went over to both bins where each type of sand they offered was located and grabbed a handful of each. The mason sand was what you’d expect. The cushion sand was more like a white sand beach type of sand. To me, I’d assume it would level out even better, but wanted to see if any of y’all had experience with it before. Oh and it’s $20 less per yard than mason sand!

appreciate to feedback and input

If they were both basically the same grain size then I would go with the cheaper of the two. You just don't want any pebbles or anything like that in the sand as it will be harder for it to work itself down into the canopy of the grass.
Kinda what I figured. Finer grade sand would be easier to spread. Guess it could be more prone to washing away in a turd floater of a rain, but I’m not going to do it with a big rain in the forecast.
appreciate it!
Bump for any other input from anyone else.
thanks again
You want angular sand, not rounded sand. Best bet is to look for the same suppliers that your local golf courses use. I would expect beach sand to be rounded but you would need to confirm.
Good info. Appreciate it!

This post helped. I’m going back and forth between my options of masonry sand or screened fill sand. This screened fill sand “can also be used as a leveling course in many outdoor masonry applications, as a bed for an above ground pool, or to construct a sand volleyball court.” I think this maybe too rounded now.
