Liquid fertilizer for annuals?

260 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Phids
Looking to mix up some liquid fertilizer for the annuals (petunias, celosia, impatiens) in my beds using some AMS I have on hand. Any recommendations as far as how much AMS/gallon of H2O? And how long to leave on the leaf before watering in?

Or is it better to just spread some of the granules around the base of each plant and water in?

Thanks!

Personally, I feel that foliar feeding is for lawns. Most annuals/perennials seem to do better with soil feeding. Best practice is to mix it and use the solution as a soil drench, but I am lazy and do what you are asking. I spread the dissolvable granules and then water them in or wait for rain to do it for me.
Thanks @bernstem - I’ll mix some up as a soil drench.

This is what I did. I couldn't find anything on foliar spraying the new landscaping I had just put in. So i just drenched it at the roots with some liquid starter that I had. Going forward I will just use some 10-10-10 for it. I need to figure out how often to fert it though. The drench seemed to work pretty well. Getting a lot of good growth along with deadheading my roses. I think I'll get some flowering on my hydrangeas too.
For annuals I have found success with simply drenching the soil (and covering the leaves) with some cheap generic fertilizer and reapplying every few weeks:
