Lichen on Japanese Maple

This guy seems to be in decline, which is a bummer. Lichen/moss has been around for at least 2 years on the bark which from reading isn't in and off itself harming the tree, just a sign of overall poor tree health. Canopy is slowly thinning out and the thinner branches fall off from time to time.

I've not prioritized doing anything about this but will probably call an arborist soon. Any tree nerds have a sense on whether something like this is salvageable? Or what an arborist is likely to recommend? I'm not going to attempt anything DIY here will have pros address this but I'd like to get a better sense before i call someone if possible. TIA

Yeah,
I agree you should call a pro here and have them asses what might be going on.
Do you know how old the tree is?
Have you had a soil test done around the tree dip line?
Have you ever heavily pruned this tree to encourage new growth in the past?
It could be that it's getting too much fertilizer from your grass (looks awesome by the way), most Japanese Maples do not require/like heavy fertilizer and pesticides.
I also know that their roots don't like to be in moist/wet soil and they prefer to have a mulch bed so roots can get oxygen. Grass could be choking it out.
Still your best bet is a pro to evaluate in person for sure.
@Jeffersonzoysia thanks for all these considerations! Definitely will be consulting an arborist. I don't consider this area to be particularly wet/moist, but it makes sense that the tree would prefer a mulch bed in lieu of grass. I have a very similar sized Japanese maple about 20 yds away that is likewise surrounded by grass at the trunk and is thriving. I've never pruned it, I've been about 2-1/2 years, I'm not sure how old it is but if I had to guess, about 15-20 years old.

I do have a recent soil test although it was performed with turfgrass in mind

I'll report back here once I have someone assess

What did the arborist say? Our maple (even larger than this one) looks similar…
