Hi,
Newbie here, be gentle please.
Purchased a house with 1/3 an acre in Zone 5a, heavy clay soils. The side yard (75ish ft long) is not level, basically a V shape, sloping away from the side of the house, into a noticeable depression (running about 2/3 the length of the yard) then back up to the neighbor's drive and front stone wall. I suspect this is because they added a french drain and the ground above the drain has settled. It's noticeably wet in this spot after heavy rains...and the grass continually dies off, so I'm assuming it's because it's too wet (and because it's a favorite spot for my dog).
The other variable is that the previous owners planted a crapton of Rose of Sharon around the perimeter (front and side) which have runners all over the yard. I pulled about 1/2 of the bushes this spring, and the remaining ROS bushes will be pulled up by the end of September...but I suspect it will take another year before the ROS runners die off.
I have 2 raised beds I no longer want and a whole crapload of fresh organic mulch (had to have 7 trees cut down, either too close to the house or dying). And a rototiller.
So, I have some tools to work with. But I don't know if I should save the bulk of the mulch to use as a leveling agent or just get rid of it.
Thoughts?
Thanks
