My dad has asked me to help with killing English ivy. It's spreading from the neighbors into their yards and trees. I've tried 41% glyphosphate and it doesn't do much to slow it down. Anyone have any other suggestions?

When we bought our house, English ivy had grown into the HVAC units, up multiple trees, up the entire side of the house and into the attic. I had very limited success with herbicide. Glyphosate didn't touch it. The best bet is to manually remove it. For the trees, cut a band of the ivy away around the trunk maybe a foot or two so you can new growth, and let everything else up in the tree wither and die.

I didn't know about this chemical when I was removing the ivy but I would look at giving Crossbow (2,4-D and Triclopyr) a try.

Thanks I will check out crossbow. You're right it pretty much laughs at glyphosphate. I would remove it manually but it's to much for just me and him. He has almost 3/4 of an acre covered but he stuff all over the trees and other bushes etc.

The fellow at Site One today on the phone told me to remove manually and respray the regrowth with roundup. I politely reminded him that we were talking over .75 of an acre that's thick with this ivy.
It pretty much came down to he wouldn't sell me anything because I didn't have a license. Still going to give some crossbow a try I believe.

What a tool. You don't need a license for site one, and glyphosate doesn't exactly absorb through the roof so what good is that approach going to do? Order online or find a different supplier. Crossbow is available at the orange big box store, for around $20-25.

I would recommend straight Triclopyr rather than the Crossbow, and it's going to require multiple applications. It is also extremely important to use a surfactant to get the weed killer to stick to the ivy's waxy leaves. Did you use a surfactant with the glysophate?

@HoosierHound Yes I did use a surfactant. Still didn't do much in the way of even stunting it.

@Movingshrub I'm going to try and find something from an online store. Locally the next closest places is about 45 min away that would carry it I believe.
