As told, I bought a JD 180 from Weeks Machinery. Paid $650+ 250 shipping. Glad I did not get the 220 cause the transport axles stick out too far and I would not have been able to get it in the back yard gate. They shipped it via ABF. Only took 2 days to get it from Georgia to Texas. It was supposed to get shipped to my local JD dealer. Not sure what happened and there seemed to be some confusion and triangulation going on. Weeks seem to be in a big hurry and get it gone. They did not even wait for the check to clear and put it on a truck the minute they got the check. So I got a call asking when I wanted to come get it from the freight HUB and picked it up myself. Probably saved me from getting milked by the JD dealer for basic maintenance I can do myself and I picked it up on my time instead of waiting on deliveries and whatnot.

Slightly more rough condition than I expected. But I did a look over and gave the pull start a rip. It fired up on the first pull, controls all seem to work, it runs (won't idle) and I tested the reel buy cutting an aircraft landing strip in the middle of the yard to get a feel for it and see if the reel even cuts at all. It did, a total scalp right down to the dirt. LOL.

Original thoughts: Its a heavy beast and the front end feels like it wants to lift when you push it. Almost seems you have to lift up on the handle to prevent it.

I'll mess with a few days (supposed to rain all week) and see what I think. Worst case.....it scalps really good! I was surprised it got grass at all that was probably 1-1/2" or so tall.

Holy moly, you weren't kidding when you said it scalped a landing strip! My Toro had a time bogging down with the poa when I was trying to attack it on the north side of my yard. The reel kept getting choked up. Looks like you'll be able to mow at night too, although when I have my light on, it's hard to use because it bobs all over the place (thanks to my crater-like yard that isn't smooth).

It is recommended to slightly lift the handlebars while mowing with the JD's. Look down where the handlebars attach to the frame, there will be wiggle room between two rubber stops. The goal is to keep the bars in between the rubber so the mower is not influenced by the operator and floats over the turf.

It's a PITA at first but this will be my 3rd season with my 220B and I don't even have to think about it anymore it's just second nature.

That's best practice with the fixed-head Jakes too.

Not pushing down on the handlebars is a good practice on all reel mowers. A mower where the traction control does not need to be constantly squeezed or held helps. I mow one handed with my GM 1000 unless dealing with a small, irregularly shaped lawn. The one hand on the handlebar is either not pushing or pushing slightly up.

I ordered a couple parts from Weingartz. (1) MT1088 The stud bolts for the adjusters. They are not broken but I figured they would get some use so I order new ones. (2) AMT2800 Belt set.

I got an email from Weingarts this AM saying JD no longer makes either and they are not availible. WHAT?? The stud bolts, meh I could maybe see that. The belts I dont undestand.
