I usually overseed the first week of September...

Regarding my fall pre-emergent, Barricade's label says to wait until 60 days after seeding to apply. Would early November, in general, be too late for a Fall pre-emergent in the transition zone? If so, should I do my overseeding sooner, like in late-August, and apply my barricade in late-October? Or is that still too late?

I've read a few things saying to put down a pre-emergent around Sep 15th, but that interferes with overseeding.

If the ground is not frozen, then it is not to late.

Of course as more time the soil is not protected, the more risk of having the conditions that allow poa annua to grow and develop roots. Also, the later in the season, the less chance for new poa to develop roots to survive the winter.

Overseed and preM can't coexist. Ideally you want the preM to be there once the temps start to drop into the ~70f (poa annua germination temps). If you need to overseed, then use tenacity and wait the 60 days to apply preM. Is it perfect? No, but there needs to be a compromise (overseed or PreM).

The real question or challenge, do you really need to overseed every year? Could just using a nitrogen blitz be enough? I know the transition zone has more challenges with summer and fungus, so you will be the one that has to answer that question. Maybe more folks in the transition zone will chime in.

Thanks g-man...

I guess I dont really *need* to overseed each year, I'm just use to that practice since fescue doesn't really spread, and my fescue would thin out a bit each year and needs overseeding to stay thick. However, I'm transforming my lawn into a mix of KBG and PRG in the future though, and hoping to phase out the fescue in my lawn. I know KBG can spread and fill in thin areas of the lawn, which is good, so my plan was to just overseed with PRG at the end of each summer in the future.

I will apply barricade at the 60-day mark, around Nov 11, and see how it goes. I think I should seed sooner next year (if I decide to seed), maybe mid-late August, so I can get the pre-emergent down a bit sooner.

A word of caution.

Many have tried to overseed kbg into a no mix without success. Kbg takes a while to germinate and to start growing (3-4 weeks). During that time, the rest of the lawn keeps growing and shadows the new grass. If you have bare spots, then maybe. If you have a bare yard (aka reno), then yes.
