A few days ago I began noticing seedlings in my Bewitched reno that were significantly taller than others. Over this past weekend, they've really begun to stick out - photo of one here:

These are clearly not Bewitched or any other kind of KBG. I've only noticed them in the northwest quadrant of my yard where the soil is well drained and the sun hits all afternoon and evening. Might they be tall fescue or possibly quack? I had both in the area prior to this year's reno...

If it is TF or quack, is there anything I should do now or at all this year, or should I plan on attacking them sometime next year?

How many of these do you have? There's no doubt that it's not KBG or even another bluegrass such as poa annua or poa trivialis.

That's an excellent picture, by the way. However, immediately after taking the picture, please tell me you pulled the weed out so that it's not there anymore...

Crabgrass, Large. Makes sense when you say it's the area that receives lots of direct sunlight and well draining soil, thus the soil is warmer and probably dries out a little more than the other areas.

Crabgrass likes alternating dry / moist soil to germinate.

Tenacity will kill it, and it's better to get it sooner than later. That's ONLY IF the bewitched is mature enough to handle the tenacity and you walking on it.

Personally, if you can walk your entire renovation area and pluck out by hand what is there today in less than 15 minutes, I'd do that. Repeat every 3-4 days.

Apply a pre-emergent in the spring to prevent the crab grass next year.

Cool. Thanks, everyone. I'd guess there's maybe 1 weed for every square foot within the affected area. We probably only have about 2-4 weeks of good growing weather left this year in MN, so I think I'll stick with hand-picking the weeds until spring. Here's to a warm fall!
