Other valid possibilities that come to mind are:

Grass type or age

Mowing differences in the Fall

Previous relative levels of snow cover/piles

Remnant of a past stressful even during the past 6 months (e.g. drought, grubs, etc.)

01redcrew:

In indy we are having a harsh winter. The subzero temperatures, ice, and snow is going to stress the lawn a bit more than previous winters. Looking at your image, your yard looks better than those around you. That's a good sign. Once we get into spring, it will have a head start into green up and I think it will be just fine.

Another couple of factors into the difference, sun and shade from the house and HOC. I have a hypothesis that hoc is the biggest factor in how it looks over winter. I'm running an mini experiment in a common area that I mowed lower than the landscape contractor does (everything else (nitrogen, etc) being the same). The higher hoc looks brown because the longer leaf blades dry faster, are more exposed and covers the greener blade below.

Thanks for the feedback guys. To the left of the picture is my house you can barley see the sidewalk. The sun this time of the year is to the south of my house(left). Also across the way across from my neighbors trailer is a barn there that might block the sun a lot this time of year I honestly don't look that close lol. It was really dry this fall till about November and we just recently had about 6 inches of snow that just left the lawn last weekend and now temps are mid 40s-50 for the high. I don't think the snow plows could of got salt that far up but I could be wrong

So came home today for lunch and I looked out the window I think the problem is that part of the yard isn't getting much is any sun this time for year. Don't mind the darker green shadow that's not the lawn it's the window doing that
