Many of the articles I've read say to not topdress more than 1/2 an inch so to not "smother" the grass below but that seems extremely conservative to me. 1/2 an inch is not much at all. I'm trying to level out some ugly ruts and low areas and I'm top dressing with lawn soil. Not using sand, just straight lawn soil, more expensive but I only needed a few bags.
Obviously there probably IS a point where you can smother the grass below, but is it really just a 1/2 inch?I have Bermuda that has fully greened up, so it's no longer dormant. Is it ok to put out a few small areas of say 1-2 inches of soil without it killing the Bermuda underneath?
