So i have been back and forth researching if I should hire or attempt to dethach my turf. I would love to do everything (scalp, dethach, sand and leveling) but budget concerns for the lawn spring cleanup are being taken into consideration. What do you guys recommend to please both budget and sanity taking into consideration the size of my lawn that I have to take care of.

MsTin - I see you have a lawn size of 21K. Do you use your Fiskars 18" push reel for the entire lawn? I'm interested in seeing the responses from others regarding dethatch and top dressing. I have 15k size lawn with a lot of slope and interested to see the cost analysis.

That's a tough call... 21k is a lot of lawn to level. My biggest concern with hiring it out would be finding someone that would do the job to your liking. Are there any natural division lines to where you could split the project up?

That's why a lot of us are here. DIYers. In many aspects of life. The leveling would seem to me the most challenging for a large lawn. I have about 8k left in the backyard for a reno next fall and I will be leveling it myself. It's bad enough I plan to rent a tractor with box blade to do the back and front while I have it. But I know how to run a tractor and attached implement to level as I did excavating and landscaping for a living for 7 years.

As asked above is the 18" Fiskars what you have? If it's all you have with no plan to buy equipment then scalping would be a challenge. I only mow about 15k and I bought a rider after living on the property for a year. 21K would be a lot of work but doable.

Yes, it is what I use to mow in between a yard crew that comes every 2 weeks to give myself a break once in awhile. I do stages of my yard everyday to make it manageable. Good news is that i get a good workout in by being so obsessive! This forum is so enabling.

I have a guy that will help me out. He leveled part of an open part of land for me for $300. He has a tractor so maybe I can just rent equipment and ask him if he can drag something around. Only it's a big tractor and the tires will make more bumps. I don't think that he has a lawn tractor. :? I remember him saying that the large slopes in my yard make him nervous

My best approach budget wise would be to do the backyard, (10k) then only do part of the front yard. I want to get a lawn tractor but neither my husband nor I want the responsibility when it is the hottest part of the year.

Budget wise breaking it up seems to make sense for you. That's the only way I can do it. I could do it all and then on Christmas morning pull up the blind, point to the yard and yell "Merry Christmas" to the kids
