Hi all. Just like the description says. I know its getting a little late in the season. I live in norther utah. I used a fertilizer/ crabgrass preventer maybe mid March. I also used the spray bottle weed killer to stop living crabgrass and other weeds. My crabgrass is starting to take over but are still small. I am trying to get my lawn good this year and thought I got a jump on it but its turning out like shit. at this stage in the game what can I do? what do you guys recommend? I uploaded a photo of the worst area in the back yard. most of the crab grass has only two or 3 leaves on it.

It is not likely to have crabgrass this early in the season. Crabgrass dies with freezing temperatures and needs the soil above 50F to germinate and a couple extra weeks to grow into something you could see. Could you take up close pictures of the weed?

a couple weeks ago I used this after I noticed some crab grass starting to grow. thought it did the job after most of it started to get burned and turn red but now it is just bigger and the older leaves show the damage from spray but they are fightng on.

@gyouska

What product did you use as pre-emergent? It should have prevented crabgrass germination.

What's your comfort level with mixing and spraying your own herbicides?
I have zero experience mixing my own herbicides. I have a garden hose canister tho. with your guidance I am sure I can figure it out. what should I do?

@gyouska that looks like Bermuda. I even see the small hairs in the leafs. Bermuda is a warm season weed that some grow as a lawn. It is one of the hardest thing to get rid of. It needs multiple rounds of round up. One option is to embrace it.

@Ware can you confirm this is Bermuda?

I can upload a another photo. there are some deal skeletons from last year. this stuff grows as one long runner. which can reach lengths of a couple feet. I have tried pulling some out by hand last year and they are so long its ridiculous. It does look similiar to the photo of bermuda grass. this stuff dies every year tho. all growth from last year is dead and it just starts new sprouts from seed every spring.

I just gave it another spray of spectracide. it did seem to damage it a few weeks ago but wasnt enough to kill it. I am going to do it again in a few days and see how it looks. I have heard the bigger it is the less the spectracide will affect it. they are all still mostly small with only a few leaves such as the one I showed in the photo.

You said it has runners a couple of feet? That definitely sounds like bermuda. It doesn't die every year, just goes dormant (turns brown) and comes back to life again when it's warm out. Every year it will keep spreading over summer. You can use a mix of fluazifop and triclopyr once a month over summer to ding it and it will take 2-3 years to eliminate. This will make your other grass a little unhappy though so overseed and fert every fall! Or, do a full renovation with glyphosate (3 apps every 2 weeks apart with watering). I'll be doing some vids on this to test out it's efficacy.
