I am looking to over-seed about 3k of lawn in my backyard that got hit a bit hard this summer. I am located in MA right on the border of Zone 6A and 6B.
Most of my existing lawn (all 10k of it) is a mix of fine fescue, some TTFT, some terrible tall fescue (KY31), KBG, and PRG. It's just a mix. I hate (HATE) fine fescue.
I used my sun joe to dethatch about 3k of space in the back and want to overseed it with something that's good and hearty but realistic. If needed I can also top dress really bad areas that are down to existing bare dirt to get some fresh soil in there.
I need help picking good seed or a mix...

- Fine fescue - no way, I don't want to add any more of this
- KBG - I would love this, but I heard this is hard for over-seeding because of the long 4-week gemination time. I understand the existing grass even if stunted will outgrow and shade it out. Would KBG work if I figure out how to pre-germinate it and then apply it? This to me is the best option but I know its not realistic.
- PRG - I spot seeded this last year in a few spots via Scott's High Traffic mix and loved it in the fall, but it was not great this summer. I had high hopes, but doesn't seem to be as robust as I thought. Thinned out and was flimsy in the summer, even with irrigation.
- TTTF - I feel like this is probably what I need, but I don't want thick stuff. I know KY-31 is not really turf grass but that's what comes to mind. Is there a good variety of TTTF that is less thick and tall and almost more like KBG that would be good? I want the hardiness of TTTF with the look of KBG (ha ha so realistic right???)
