Goals for 2022:
  • Continue to reduce my inputs (aka move more into maintenance)
  • Remove backyard apple trees.

Winter
It was a mild winter. We barely had snow coverage but we had a ton of rain. Overall the lawn looks healthy. The side yard developed some powdery mildew that I sprayed with fungicide 3 weeks ago.

I was finally able to mow the lawn. It's been raining every day and the backyard is still muddy wet. I applied AMS to the front reno. I still need to do prem, but more rain is in the forecast tonight.

You guys in the Midwest did well this Winter and kept so much color!

Here, I did not see a single lawn that did not brown out despite record warm temps most of the Winter. I think the 18 inches of rain in well under 3 months (closer to 2 months time) was the cause. I think we beat you with the rain amount.
I'm guessing that a warm winter helped your reno look this good coming into spring?

I followed the Reno guide. I start early and feed it in fall so it goes into winter strong.

Here is a picture from 14 January and look at the background yards.

5g/ksqft of prodiamine
2tsp into 3ksqft of front lawn tenacity (very old bottle)
1g/ksqft water

Fired up the irrigation to water it in before the next line of storms.

Socks, pants, long sleeve jacket and t shirt are in the washer.

Mowed after replacing the reel. I was a day later than what I wanted. The lawn is growing and the tenacity is bleaching all of the weeds. I need to spot spray with a 3 way and use round up in the flower beds to kill the grass growing there. It is starting to fill in. The weather is getting warmer and now less rain, so the irrigation is running using the weather data. One inch clippings since the last mow so I double mowed the front in a checker board pattern.

So green early. That's nice concrete work too.
What happened to the reel? Damage or just regular maintenance replacement?

Edit - I read up in your other thread why you changed it 👍.

Another mow before the predicted rain. 3/4 to 1in clippings again. I might need to start PGR next week since it is 1in in 3 days (too much). Temps are supposed to drop, so that should slow it down.

Pulled poa annua that tenacity bleached.

What rate on the Tenacity did you apply to light up the Poa A? I know that the number is on the site somewhere, but I can't recall...

DISREGARD> I see it in an earlier post..
For those that didn’t see the earlier post, I have in my notes:

Mix 0.17oz/1000 with label rate of Triclopyr. One week later use 0.085oz/1000 with label rate of Triclopyr.

Sound right?

  • Backlap the reel mower with 120 and 180 compound. The greaser/cleaning of most surfaces. It looks like new.
  • Edge and mow. 3/4in in 2 days. No applied nitrogen. I need PGR.
  • Round up mulch beds and mulch edges.
  • Collect soil sample (only from the backyard)
  • 2lb/ksqft of SOP
  • Spot round up anything that looks like poa annua.
I inspected the area I had poa t in previous years. I'm happy to report, no poa t in sight. The approach was round up in late Oct. Dead spot all winter and then plug the area in spring.

3/4in in 2 days.
Kinda wild, yet typical for Indiana. Growth potential 99+% over the weekend, down to 2% today, then back up to 98% by 4/19. Right on par with years past though. Looked through pics and saw we had ground covering snow on 4/18/22 and 4/20/21.

After so much rain and cold days, I was finally able to mow (1week since the last mow). 2in clippings. I had to double mow the front to make it look ok. The backyard will need the double mow this weekend.

This plugging strategy seems like the best way.
I bought a pro plugger and did a little last week.

G-man, where did you get your SOP? My local SiteOne doesn't carry it and I haven't found a good, cost-effective source online.
You are not likely to find this online. Advance Turf Solution is the place I go, but you might need to talk to local fert stores.
I could find it easiest from yardmastery, wish I could find it elsewhere.
