Found this site a few months ago and I have to say I've learned so much in a short amount of time. It's tough not to jump into everything you read right away but what can help is some proper planning, so who can help me out???
Fall goals: aeration, detaching, topdressing (with emphasis on leveling, so will use 100% sand), overseeding. I'm in zone 5b and have about 7500 sq feet with a mix of KBG and PRG. The backyard is the main area I'd like to level out and thats about 4000 sq feet. What order should all of this be done in? Can it all be done at once or should I space it out as not to stress out the lawn too much? I know the lower I mow the easier it will be to topdress the lawn but again, with dethatching, aeration and then mowing low...I'm just wondering if that would be too much. I've never really done any of this on my own, I had the lawn aerated last fall but I don't think they did a good job so I plan on renting a machine and doing it myself. I also plan on buying the Greenworks corded dethatcher since I plan on doing that once a year.
For overseeding, I found this KBG mix from SSS that I'd like to try out(Midnight, Bewitched and Award): https://www.seedsuperstore.com/catalog/p-100006/ss1100-bluegrass-blend I know it's not typically recommended to overseed with KBG but I'd like to give it a shot. I'm guessing there hasn't been any new grass introduced in a long time, so I'd like to see how that does with the older lawn. SSS recommends 1-2 lbs per 1k sq feet for overseeding...does applying more then that give it a better chance or will the extra seed do more harm then good and basically just fight for resources? Should I be throwing down a starter fert with this as well? Recommendations?
That's about it right now, I plan on getting my soil test done ASAP. @Ware recommended Waypoint Analytical, so I think I'm going to try them out. Someone mentioned they have the soil probes on there but I couldn't find them, anyone recommend a nice handheld one?
If you made it this far, thank you reading and thank you for any recommendations. I've read through a lot of posts and tried piecing together a plan on my own but figured I would just lay it all out there and ask the experts. Appreciate all the help. Speaking of help...anyone who feels like mentoring a newbie...feel free to shoot me a message and I'd be happy to provide additional details and pictures.
