See pics:

The mulch was dumped partially on my lawn. The pile you see in the pic used to be much bigger and completely covered that spot. I started grabbing from that side of the pile first. The total time the mulch was covering the grass was only about 6 hours. The pics above are about 24 hours after the mulch was removed.

Is this grass dead? If so, what exactly killed it in such a short period of time? I thought I'd have a bit more time to uncover the grass before it took damage. If the grass isn't dead, is there anything I can do to get it to recover more quickly? I already tried to rake all the mulch off I could.

Ryeguy, I did the same as you but my mulch was left on my lawn for days.My effected area was way worse than yours. Was sure I had to reseed.I would just keep that area moist and continue to cut it to stimulate growth. We have had plenty of rain here in Ma. It's been 3 weeks now and the area filled back in suprisingly well.Even to the point on not having to reseed.I will post a pic asap.No Worries!!...

The mulch probably suffocated the lawn and if it was hot could have cooked it as well. As others have said give it a good soaking after removing as much of the mulch as you can.

I deal with this as well and always ask the guys to start moving forward while dumping to stretch out the pile and avoid any getting on the grass but some always does which I try and remove as quickly as I can.
