Hello all. I'm trying to figure out why my st Augustine will not run into this area. The area has never greened up this year.

Help me!

A couple of clues here:

This house was a newbuild
I did the screwdriver test, it did not go down in this area.
I may have to take another picture tomorrow for a better view

What I am I doing wrong here

I would do a couple of things... Check more areas around it with the screw driver to see if it goes in some areas but not there( could have something buried under the sod, a neighbor of mine had a dead spot and found a sheet of plywood under the lawn). If it seems like nothing is under it but dirt then I would dethatch and aerate the area.. then hit with fert and water...

Are you talking about that small patch by the street or the larger one that looks like it extends into what looks like the property line? I'm having a hard time seeing exactly what area you mean, I have a hard time with colors though.

Looks like a lot of the St. Augustine by the street is in stiff competition from what looks to be Bermuda. Could be something going on under the soil or it could have just been a Bermuda stronghold since the St. Augustine was planted and it's proximity to the street is causing it to dry out just a bit faster than the rest of the yard, giving the Bermuda the advantage.

What is your fertilizer, watering and weed control schedule? If you have in ground irrigation, you should confirm this area gets even coverage.

I'm also having trouble seeing the dead area.

Once a month with turf builder and Scott's green max. I switch between the two. Water could be a problem because I was only watering on Tuesday and Saturday.

I believe SA requires a lot more water than bermuda does. Do you know how much water you were putting out on those two waterings?

I tried to highlight what I think you might be talking about.

it would help for a close up shot of the spot you are talking about. Again, doesn't seem like a huge problem if for most of us we can't even find the obvious dead spot you're talking about.

I think your main problem is probably water. St Augustine that gets direct sun needs a ton of water to look it's best.

Hard to see but I think Bermuda competition is probably causing stress to the St. A as well. Bermuda loves both full sun and monthly fertilizing like you are doing. In general, St Augustine doesn't need as much nitrogen it sounds like you may be giving it. If you're hitting it with 1lb per 1k sq ft every single month it might be too much and your selecting for Bermuda which is using the nutrients to mostly build root structure under the ground, exacerbating the water problems.

You also mentioned the screwdriver test, you should probably compare this area with other areas as well.
