Hey all,
I'm planning on renting a core aerator from home depot. I will avoid areas with roots bulging from the ground, but I know that there are some areas where there's going to be sweet gum or maple roots a few inches under the surface. Will the typical aerator have a problem with this? I've taken some plugs from these areas in the past, and I always have to use two feet and jump on the plugger to get through the roots. They're not very big in diameter, but they seem to be everywhere. I googled that the typical aerator will go 2-4" in the soil, which is where these little roots are. I have cut down a fair bit of trees since moving in, but I know the roots are still there, and the grass in these areas seems to still be competing with the tree roots as they're sending up suckers closer to the tree in their last ditch effort to survive. My hope would be the aeration would cut through the tree roots and help promote some new grass roots. Anyone have any experience?
