So I have long been battling POA with fall pre emergent treatments. While, not perfect, it has certainly helped with the reduction in POA year over year, so it must be doing something.

I have long also battled this by keeping the grass long, 3.5". However, after some reading here, I learned that to promote KBG growth I should keep it shorter when cooler. So, I want to do this, but I also saw that if I am going from 3.5 to 2/2.5" I should dethatch.

I have a pull behind dethatcher and aerator I would plan to use when going shorter, but obviously this goes against the initial attack of fall pre-em. I cannot create a barrier if I am just going to rip through it, so the question is, what should I be thinking about for the fall? Should I continue the course and apply the pre-emergent and stay long? Or go shorter, encourage growth and density with a solid dethatch, aerate and heavy nitrogen?

There are obviously lots of options the question is, what is most ideal.

I would honestly pull a few plugs in several locations to check for thatch and see if it's needed. If it's not and it passes the screwdriver test I'd let it be. I've been mowing at 3 in this year and it seems to be less weeds compared to 4in
