I have a TruCut C27 with a bucket on the front.. But also have an old Honda rotary mower as well (the blades on the reel were sharpened this winter, I have no idea about the last time the rotary blades were sharp)

Would it be better to scalp with the reel or the rotary ?

It really depends on the height - I would say most people with a reel mower end up scalping lower than the rotary will cut. In that case, I would take off as much as you can with the rotary, then switch to the reel. I also like to run the rotary w/bag over everything when I finish scalping with the reel to suck up clippings left on the ground.

Even though I no longer do this anymore but it's a very effective way to get the lawn cut down LOW.
