What would the ideal stuff?

I can get river sand, or masonry sand for the same $45 a yard prices.

I have some good slope in my yard so my gut says the masonry sand would lock better, but unsure of what's best. I have quite a few holes to fill!

I believe mason sand is what most of the guys use on this forum. Here is a link to my leveling project done about six weeks ago.

Masonry sand because it is washed and screened - or really any sand that doesn't have pebbles.
