Los Angeles has more days annually with a positive growth potential for cool season turf versus warm season turf. I would recommend a turf type tall fescue. I live a little south in San Diego and tttf does extremely well. You can sod, but seeding is much cheaper between the temps of 60F - 75F. Seeding periods for tttf in LA would be 14 Feb thru 28 Apr or 8 Oct thru 25 Nov. Cultivars that perform well and quite common in your area are 4th Millenium or Marathon. Good Luck.

I second tall fescue. Bermuda browns out in December thru March.
