So I noticed this in some areas of my lawn. Some areas larger than others ~100sqft?

Most of the blades look good, but mixed in there are a bunch of what looks to be blades of grass that just shriveled up and died. These are not grass clippings but simply blades of grass that sporadically died. I hadn't applied any chemicals or anything on the lawn other than fertilizer.

My guess is that it is the plant shedding blades, in preparation for cooler seasons?

Nope. Out in the middle of the lawn in probably the greenest area surrounding it and getting the most sun of most of the land.
