I am looking to renovate my back yard with Sod, currently has Bermuda 419. The inital game plan was:
roto-till the entire yard
come back with compost over the whole yard 1/2-3/4"
roto-till compost into the soil
roll the surface to perfect grading and level surface
install the sod
sand the joints and roll it.

The backyard now is just thin grass, we had a competing willow tree that killed alot of the grass and a play set that knocked out another big part. We had big pine trees that hung over the yard and other trees. All of the problem areas are gone now.

I have one tree that I need to move which will happen before the sod goes in.

If I was going through the trouble to re-sod a different bermuda variety (I've considered it), a complete kill of what I had would be my first step - otherwise you will end up with a mix of the grass you wanted and the grass you didn't want.

Iriasj2009 may have one of the more extreme contrasts with Celebration vs. Tifway, but he is going through this now.

I think J_nick has done the best job I've seen at killing bermudagrass, and even after multiple rounds of chemicals he had some regrowth - it's no easy task.

I guess it really comes down to what your expectations are though. FWIW, your Tif 419 can definitely hold its own with the proper inputs:

To get rid of my common, I blanket sprayed 5 times over the course of about 8 months, along with a few spot treats. It just kept coming back, some "mutations" for lack of a better word, had a very high tolerance. It's been almost 3 months and no sign of the common in my tiftuf, however I do see it loitering around the edges and peeking out from under the fence.

As I told Iriasj2009 just now on his thread, you may want to try watching the Grass Factor's new video on surfactants to see if that will give you any ideas to research on how to best obtain a complete kill. I didn't realize there were so many.

Fusilade and roundup are what I've read sod farms, golf courses use - as reputation is on the line. However .....does 419 and tifftuff look that different?

Tiling would be good for mix up and a double down on killing, just more work. Your plan is what I did 5 years ago, rolling I think was the key to stability.
