Hi everyone,

I'm the newbie here and an inexpert in lawn.

I live in the south of France and I have about 200 meter square of common bermuda grass.

Here in France, in Europe, bermuda is not so known as in USA.

So, what's my problem? Well, my lawn is full of bermuda seedhead and I cannot removed them properly. I think the problem come from my mower. It's a cheap, light and manual reel mower of Gardena. I cut at 22 millimeter... The result is really sad.

Here some photos about my lawn.

Any tips, any suggestion?

Thank you en advance.

1st of all welcome to The Lawn Forum From France wowwww.
I dont think you problem is your mower. I used a manuel reel mower for 1 1/2 years and my lawn was great.
have you adjusted the bedknife to reel. Will it cut paper down the length of the bedknife. You can backlap alot of manuel reels. I have done it. but is is not fun.
What is your HOC ( height of cut)
How often to you mow your lawn?
Very nice.

I mow my lawn once per week, two times whenever possible. I know, it's not enough, I will do better in the future :D .

My HOC is 22 mm (less than 1").

And about my mower, no i cannot cut paper down the length of the bedknife. I tried to adjust, calibrate the mower without succes.

It is absolutely possible to mow all seed heads with a manual reel mower. I have done it many many times.
Your problem is your mower.
Its an expensive piece of crap. With all reel mowers you should be able to adjust the reel too bed knife. If its not cutting paper and you cant adjust it then reel to bed knife then that is your problem.
You will always get seed heads in your Bermuda if you are only cutting once a week.
I have tried many manual mowers and I found the best being the American Standard or Great States manuel reel mowers

These can cut below 1/2 inch HOC can be back lapped your self and you can adjust the reel to bed knife easily. You are supposed to check reel to bed knife before you cut everyday. Make sure you can not adjust it on your existing mower. That does NOT sound right.

Thank you again Tellycoleman. To know that with a reel mower I can solve my problem... sounds good.

In fact I would invest for the next year in a new mower: Allett 14e.

So for the moment i think cannot do many things, maybe mowing at least 2 times per week.

Just a thought, not sure if PGR (plant growth regulator) are available there, but I have not had a seed head since first application in May and had lots of them before. 11-12% trinexapac-ethyl. roughly 8 ml per 100m2. Would need a sprayer and read the post on PGR. link https://thelawnforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=54. But what @Tellycoleman said is correct you should be able to adjust reel to bed knife and just cut them off no problem.

take a look at these and see if yours can be adjusted in a similar way.
