Hello, somewhat new to the forum and paying attention to my lawn. I joined last summer and tried to do what I could with my limited knowledge. I'm not one to make excuses but my family and job keep me very busy in the summer, and I had not thought much about my grass and more specifically bermuda. Anyways, I caught the bug and started paying attention and realized I was going to need to come up with a game plan and start in '23.

We built and moved into our house in spring of '19. We live on an old row crop field that hadn't been farmed for several years. Growing up, I was familiar with fescue and cutting when it was convenient. I thought that could work here, but I soon realized with no trees around I needed to harness the power of bermuda instead of fighting it. After reading a lot about bermuda, I realized I was going to have to change my cutting habits. Also, I am having to change my plan of taking a natural approach. I plan to not be quite as intensive with some of the measures that could be used, but understand my lawn might not quite look like some on here.

We live on just over 10 acres, and our "lawn" is roughly 27,000 sq/ft(Have an acre on the other side of the drive that I cut and about 3 acres in the back that I cut from time to time). About a 1/3 of it grows fairly well. I need to get my soil test completed. We have 3 kids and a dog so that also plays a part in why I plan to take a less intensive approach. Our front lawn is the most difficult spot with several weeds and soils. Not sure if I need to focus on a smaller part at a time(one a year) or see if I can do the whole thing. Budget is another reason for taking a less intensive approach.

When I started last summer(June-July '22), I took some pictures to see if I noticed any difference. The bermuda was beginning to spread, but not quite as fast I thought it might. I will try to get some of those posted soon. Fast forward to January '23. I disked 2/3 of the lawn(where the bermuda isn't established) to help level it. Along the way I broke a piece of my tractor(in the shop for who knows how long). I finished it yesterday with a section of chain link fence and some posts. I thought it helped a lot. Put down some Pre E and then the rains came last night. Created some washouts in small areas.

If you are still following on this first post, I appreciate it. Like Pre E, I figured there was no better time to start a journal than the present. It will also help me to keep up with timing and what I have done to the lawn. It will also help me get some insight from y'all on this forum. Any help and advice will be greatly appreciated. It has been amazing and encouraging to see some of the transformations on here. Looking forward to the adventure and process! Going to give it my BEST²!

Here are a few about 2 weeks later after I had fertilized and watered way more than usual. I think of the first one as what could be all over, if I spent more energy on it. Life got busy in the late summer(I coach football) and wasn’t as disciplined with taking pictures. I was also a little frustrated that the bermuda wasn’t spreading in several areas. I realized I needed to slow down and get a plan together for this year. So here I am. Open to any suggestions. Looking forward to it. Plant Terrestrial plant Groundcover Grass Shrub

I believe I came up with a decent plan for spread the bermuda by using what I have. One side of the house is covered pretty well. I’m going to focus on getting looking good, then take sprigs out of it and use them on the rest of the lawn. I have another good area in one of our pastures. I can also pull some sprigs from there. I had intended to use plugs from the good spot, but few that might be really difficult to manage with a step in plugger.
Below is the picture of the “good area”. I realized after doing a couple of things today, I have my work cut out for me. I am open to any suggestions. I will try to get better pictures to help with suggestions.

I was able to rake out some thatch in a couple of spots. I also cut the area that has the best coverage with what I have available(low, probably about an inch). I was trying to see what I was working with. I need to turn in my soil sample and I plan to apply some post emerge tomorrow.

The supposed to be in the 70s and 80s this week. Warmed up this week, but dipped down the past two nights. I found a couple of spots of good green. Excited for the season!

Friday, dropped off my soil sample that is going to Clemson Extension and picked up Vertgro 10-10-10 granules to spread. Weather cooled down the past few days, but will warm back up this week. Noticed more greening up and the herbicide I sprayed taking effect. Trying to get my old push rotary mower going(it gets down to 1.25"), and looking for a reel mower. It is tough to find a used one somewhat near by(Charlotte and Columbia areas). Any members looking to get rid of a McLane, please let me know.

Got my push mower to fire up by cleaning out the gas dish. Fired up on the first pull! It was puttering and not run at full speed. I made two passes and it cut off! Would not come back on. Think I need to clean the entire fuel system.

Weeds are growing. Picked up some Round Up to hit some areas.

Hit some spots with the Round Up. Noticing some of the weeds I hit with 2D starting to brown. Even my “good area” has a lot of weeds. Very slowing more bermuda is popping out.

This afternoon, cut the “good area” again. Afterwards, applied 10-10-10 to the whole yard. Watered in on the “good area”. The weather forecast changed a couple of times today and yesterday. Thought we were getting rain, then we weren’t. Now we are getting some tonight into the morning.

Notes:
need to do better at taking pictures
Spread granule pre em on #6

So I picked up a bit of a project, but it does what it was made to do…go low! It got reel! Sky Plant Wheel Ecoregion Tire

It is a crazy how low these things will go! I’m about speechless. Can’t wait to see how the grass does with this. I probably should made sure it was a good height and all that, but I was so excited and couldn’t stop. I will be able to check out what height it is at tomorrow. Some pics of where the bermuda does the best so far.

So more about the mower. Seller said it is a 1968. My research found it to be a Toro Greensmaster 21”. After that I’m not sure if it is a Series V, 105, or 500. I’m leaning to the Series V. 11 blade, Tecumseh engine. Carburetor was replaced. Fired up after two pulls. He said it sat for about 3 months. Once the older gas ran through, it ran great! Taller grass would bog it down, but impressed on its performance. The bedknife looked great. I think it has been replaced. The reel needs a sharpening/back lap for sure. It is serviceable in the mean time, but will probably need to be replaced.

The main thing is it needs a good cleaning and paint job. And the best part might be that it was $80. It is going to take me some time, but I plan to clean it up and restore it to good shape. Worst case scenario, it becomes a scalp mower.

Let’s go reel low!

I would be weary of using round up as well as throwing down a bunch of fertilizer right now.
Thank you for the help. And I mean that with all seriousness. Do not want it to be perceived as sarcastic. At this point I have used the RU very sparingly. I have not treated anything that is near where the bermuda is established. The area I have treated is in the shade all day and it is taking some time for it to work on some of the grass(fescue) I’m trying to get rid of. Also, I do not plan to put down anymore fertilizer for at least a month.

Now that I have a reel mower. I’m going to focus on a good cutting schedule and cleaning up the part of the lawn I want to sprig.
