I have an elm tree that is very prolific in the seed dept. Needless to say I have millions of them popping up in the lawn.
Lawn has been treated with weed and feed but that obviously isn't working...
Can I hit the lawn with a pre-emergant to keep it from happening? Maybe that and some 2-4-D?
Certainly don't want to hurt the lawn but don't want a forest of elm's in it either.....

I would just ignore them and keep mowing. Once they grow tall enough, the mower will take off the leaves. They won't survive without leaves and being super short.

If you keep mowing the little tree eventually die, or hit it with 2,4-D when the temps aren't baking.

Yea, my silver maples do the same thing. The baby trees in the grass are the easy part, the mower blade kills them after a few weekly doses. Its picking them out of everywhere else that's the chore!
