After Midnight 22k mono renovation 2023

Alright.. the front yard is getting a makeover.

I’ve spent the past 2 seasons getting my equipment, cultural practices and brain in order. I’ve read through more threads here before I joined than I care to admit, but I’m glad I came out of the shadows to join you all.

I purchased my home in 2018 and have a mishmash of grass that does not ever scratch my itch. The neighbors compliment me often and I have one of the nicest looking yards in the neighborhood (from the street). That being said, some neighbors in the other neighborhood own landscaping companies.I want their yard.

After researching cultivars and checking NTEP studies, I have decided to pull the trigger on a mono stand of After Midnight KBG. If future me struggles to control fungus and insect damage, I will deal with it then. Surprisingly I have not seen anyone Reno with this exact cultivar yet, but it tests higher than original Midnight in my area. I know that’s a popular Reno choice.
I’m excited and scared, but it’s going to happen mid-August.

I am glad to be a part of this forum, and to add another Reno thread for others to learn from, good or bad!

Question for you. That wide shovel attachment on the CAT in your photo...whatever it's called...are you using that to do the grading/smoothing? Or mostly the rake? Because someone used that attachment to do grading in my yard about 10 years ago after bringing in some soil, and I feel like it made the ground very compacted. I'm not sure that's how people typically grade, but something tells me it's not. What are your thoughts on that? Is it acceptable to do it that way in your opinion? (Someone just laughed at me one time when I brought this up, and said Bobcats don't compact soil.)

I will be using the Harley rake, then seeding and rolling in per usual. I definitely would never recommend to seed right after leveling with just a standard bucket. I can definitely see it leaving a compact surface causing issues down the road. It’s just not optimal for grass growth but works to some degree.

Well I guess I’ll just throw this in this thread. Patio is “done” but I’m 1 paver short - as god intended. Time to toss some soil in the front yard to make up for the ruts.

Grass/weeds are now popping up in the harley raked bed area. I was hoping this would not happen, so I could skip the gly app and fallowing. Now I am thinking I will potentially harley rake first, then fallow and gly.

Glyphosate kill, harley rake, fallow and more Glyphosate is what you want to do.

Planning on doing the same thing soon. Just put down the first Gly app and meeting with a buddy who has a skid steer and 60” tiller to take a look at what I want done. 30 Green Giants will get planted eventually.

A skid steer auger is worth it's weight in gold. I planted all 85 trees in about 2 hours with that bad boy and a friend plopping the trees in.

My neighbor has a one man auger he just used for his fence. I think that would work okay. I will see what attachments he can bring with the skid steer. Maybe they have one.

That will work fine for sure. Skid auger is less labor but you are at 30 trees so that’s not so bad. I paid around $200 for a day rental

Took down one old sad tree that will finally give sun to my somewhat shady spot. Also taking down the huge ugly maple that my neighbor nicely pruned on his side but not mine. Always nice to have a friend that climbs trees and chops them down.
